Natural Language Processing powers Langoo's technology for online B2 achievement

Natural Language Processing (NLP) is an area of study focused on automating the processing of human language, including written and spoken forms. In the context of language learning, NLP has two main purposes, firstly, assist learners and help them enhance their language production. And secondly, help the teacher analyze learners’ productions, and create and improve language learning materials and activities.

Personalized Language Instruction: Empowering Learners

NLP techniques have been integrated into Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) to provide personalized language instruction. These systems are able to analyze learner language, identify errors, and provide targeted feedback and guidance to students. NLP helps in detecting grammatical errors, vocabulary misuse, and other language-related issues, enabling learners to receive immediate and tailored support. These systems go far beyond traditional spelling checkers, since they take into account several factors regarding the context and instructions of the task assessed. NLP models, such as language models based on deep learning architectures, are also able to provide assistance to the student.

As a consequence, a learner centered system is created in which learners can study anytime, anywhere independently, at the same time they are guided and helped by intelligent systems. It is worth mentioning that these systems by themselves might be ineffective regarding learner’s linguistic development. Not taking into account factors such as motivation, learning methodologies, applied linguistics research or standardized systems for language assessment, the puzzle would be incomplete. That is why language and teaching specialists are joining forces with software engineers in order to build solid e-learning scenarios for students to take advantage of the expertise of teachers and linguists, and advanced AI.

Streamlining Teacher Workload

Normally, teachers have been guides, content creators, speakers, exam assessors, graders, content curators, and feedback providers, all at once. The advantages of NLP are that it allows total or partial automation of some of these functions and responsibilities, easing teacher’s workload and providing the students with more flexibility.

On the one hand, NLP algorithms have been employed in automated scoring systems for language tests and activities. These systems can assess the quality of written or spoken responses by analyzing factors such as grammar, vocabulary, coherence, and fluency. Automated scoring provides fast and objective evaluations, reducing the time and effort required for manual grading. And not only that, it can also provide feedback based on learners’ input. This feedback can include suggestions for correcting errors, alternative sentence constructions, and explanations of grammar rules or vocabulary usage.

On the other hand, NLP-powered feedback generation enhances the quality, specificity, and objectivity of feedback, providing learners with actionable insights to improve their language skills. Moreover, NLP techniques contribute to the creation and enhancement of language resources and materials. NLP can help in curating and adapting authentic native language materials for language learners, ensuring their appropriateness.

The Power of Synergy: NLP, AI, and Human Teachers

While NLP and AI technologies have revolutionized language learning and teaching, the role of human teachers remains irreplaceable. Their expertise in pedagogy, support, motivation, understanding of non-verbal cues, and fostering critical thinking skills continue to be indispensable components of effective language education. The symbiotic integration of NLP and AI with the skills and strengths of teachers, creates a dynamic and enriched learning environment for language learners.
